H.I.V. Tests Urged for 800 Million in India

Despite India’s enormous population, it would be cost-effective to fight its growing AIDS epidemic by testing all 800 million sexually active adults in the country every five years and treating all those infected, a new statistical study has concluded.
The study, published online in May by PLoS One, notes that testing there costs only $3.33, and that first-line antiretroviral therapy is about $100 a year. The World Health Organization measure for a medical intervention’s cost-effectiveness is whether it saves one year of life for less than three times the per capita gross domestic product. In India’s case, that is $3,900 per year-of-life saved.

Sex Education and Children

The beginnings of sexual awareness
"Daddy, why is the sky blue?" "Mummy, where does the sun go at night?" And then suddenly, like a bolt from the blue - "Mummy, where do babies come from?"  This question usually leaves parents squirming with embarrassment and trying to pass the buck to the other parent. Teaching children the facts of life, telling them about the birds and the bees, is something that most parents are not very comfortable with. Actually, this is a very narrow view of sex education.

Is Sex Education Necessary in Schools ?

Introducing sex education in the schools of India is an important issue. A 2007 ministry of women and child development study shows that over 50 percent of children are sexually abused. Sex is still considered a taboo in India. Parents feel embarrassed to talk openly with their children in this regard. Due to the ignorance of sex education they fall victim to AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Many NGOs are trying to create awareness on AIDS. Sex education can help people to take decisions regarding health and sexuality. It is high time for sex-education to the introduced in schools for the benefit of the youth of the country.

Why HIV/AIDS education?

Each year there are more and more new HIV infections, which shows that people either aren't learning the message about the dangers of HIV, or are unable or unwilling to act on it. Many people are dangerously ignorant about the virus - a survey found recently that a third of teens thought there was a 'cure' for AIDS. Education is an important component of preventing the spread of HIV.

The Pains of Living With HIV/Aids

As the HIV/AIDS scourge continues to wreak havoc on the lives of Nigerians, those living with it have opened up on how they are holding up under the deadly infection. RUTH CHOJI spoke with some People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
Research has shown that 4.5million Nigerians are living with HIV and this means that 1 in every 20 Nigerians is infected with HIV/AIDS. No one can dispute the fact that, persons in the age bracket of 14- 35 years have the highest rate of infection in nigeria. HIV means Human Immune Deficiency Virus while AIDS is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

HIV/AIDS awareness campaign concludes

In an attempt to educate and aware masses about AIDS/HIV and to erase misconceptions related to the deadly virus, theUttar Pradesh State AIDs Control Society(UPSACS) held a series of educational and awareness camps in 10 villages of the district from March 21-25.
