WHAT IS HIV?

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that causes AIDS. A member of a group of viruses called retroviruses, HIV infects human cells and uses the energy and nutrients provided by those cells to grow and reproduce.

WHAT IS AIDS?

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is a disease in which the body's immune system breaks down and is unable to fight off infections, known as "opportunistic infections," and other illnesses that take advantage of a weakened immune system.

Founded at the Stanford University School of Education, TeachAIDS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to address and overcome the social and cultural challenges related to HIV/AIDS prevention education. TeachAIDS utilizes a rigorous research-based process to develop medically accurate, culturally tailored HIV/AIDS educational animations. In partnership with national and international organizations, and incorporating the voices of global cultural icons, TeachAIDS disseminates free animated curricula to educators around the world. TeachAIDS materials have been tested with tremendous success in numerous developing regions and are currently used in more than 25 countries, including South Africa, China, Canada, Botswana, India, and the United State
